The Maroon

Caliban hacked his way out of the cane field with his machete.

Then he waded into the swamp.

In some places he sank to his waist.

But he knew that the water would kill his scent and make it harder for the dogs to track him

so he slogged on.

After a time, he found some berries to ease his hunger.

Then, out of the corner of his eye he thought he saw an alligator streak by.

All kinds of dangerous creatures lived in the swamp.

"I guess I'll be one of them" Caliban thought, vowing that he would never be taken alive.

  2. Hi Grandmommy,

Caliban was a Monster High Create A Monster gargoyle. I spray painted him and then hand-detailed his face. His hands, feet, and head are made of a softer plastic that doesn't take the paint as well so I'm glad I was able to cast him in this story before it all starts flaking off.

  3. Love your story. Nice paint job. Did you try spraying a matte sealer on top?

  4. Hi Vanessa,

Yes, I applied matte sealer but weeks later his head still feels a little sticky.

    1. Curious, which matte sealer did you use?

    2. It was either Krylon matte sealer or Mod Podge matte sealer. Both are spray on sealers.

  5. I enjoyed Caliban's story. He is an interesting looking fellow. Thanks for sharing his origin in your comment to The Grandmommy.

I am glad his paint job held up long enough for your to complete the story. The graphics are awesome.

    1. Hi Debbie,

On a recent trip to New Orleans, I went for a walk in the Barataria Preserve (part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park) with a friend. We shot lots of pictures and when I got home, I realized they would be the perfect background for Caliban's story. I used PhotoShop to composit him into the scenes. The swamp surrounding the River Road plantations always makes me think about how difficult it would have been for people enslaved there to escape. Some, however, actually learned how to live in the swamp and chose that form of freedom.

    2. Learning to composite is now on my to do list -- you seem to have mastered it.

I cannot imagine having to adjust to swamp living or the many other ordeals slaves endured on their escapes to freedom.

  6. Wow, I never would have guessed it was a MH doll. Great job! Did you use fusion paint?

    1. Hi Georgia Girl,

Thanks for the compliment. I have been silent for the last month or more because I've been waging a massive "pink be gone" campaign. I use Krylon Fusion paint when I can but if I can't get the color I need in the Fusion version, I buy the regular spray paint. It seems to work equally well. Unfortunately the soft plastic that Caliban's head is made of does not take any kind of paint well.
