Collector's United Doll Show 11/01/14

Last Saturday I attended the Collector's United Doll Show in Marietta, Georgia.  My first purchase was this early Janay.

I'm not sure if this is her original outfit.

She did not have shoes so we borrowed the boots from Raven Simone.

Next I plucked this Steffi faced doll from the same bargain bin.

She came nude but I purchased this outfit later from another vendor.

It is very well-made and closes with snaps.

The third doll from that bargain bin was a Kira.

I believe she must have been a Christmas decoration.

Someone did an outstanding job on the bustle dress.

The dress and the doll were only $2.

I found Yue Sai in another bargain bin.

Yue Sai Kan is a Chinese American television producer who created the long-running PBS series, "Looking East."  Ms. Kan is also a savvy entrepreneur.  In 1990 she launched Yue Sai cosmetics which vaulted to the number one brand in China by 1996.  Just as her cosmetics line sought to enhance the beauty of Asian women, in 2000 Kan saw a lack of Asian faces in the fashion doll market and created the Yue Sai wawa (doll) "to help Asian children develop confidence, knowledge and pride in their heritage as well as educate children of all heritages about Asian cultures."  I was pleased to get a new Asian face for $2.50.

For those who are wondering about her articulation, her arms can open outwards but her legs don't bend.

I have upgraded her to a Disney Princess body.  Now I just need to tackle that rat's nest of hair.

A bargain bin of action figures yielded this handsome specimen.

The vendor identified him as a generic Lanard figure.

He came with nice duds and plenty of gear.

He is nicely sculpted though he doesn't have as much articulation as a Power Team figure.

Not bad for $3!

At $15 this lady was my most expensive purchase.

She was armed to the teeth with a large knife strapped to her leg,

a dagger tucked into her boot,

a pistol in her waistband,

and a rifle on her back.

Her ensemble included this sharp leather jacket

and a bodysuit designed to fit a larger figure.

The seller thought she was a generic figure but this is a Lea-faced Mattel doll.

A Bientôt!

  1. Those are some fantastic finds (and at solid prices)!

I haven't seen one of those before, but I really like the expression on the Lanard figure's face.

    1. Hi jSarie, welcome to the blog. I'll have to cast Mr. Lanard in something soon. A lot of action figures look mean or constipated but he looks like a do right man.

  2. Congratulations on your new-to-you dolls. Those prices were fabulous.

The doll you identify as Steffi actually has the vintage Teresa head sculpt.

The Yue Sai dolls and the woman behind them appeared briefly on the Home Shopping Network doll shows during the 1990s.

I have a Lanard guy with a deeper complexion. I love his handsome face and muscular body.

    Great finds!

    1. Hi Debbie, I'm going to do a post soon about this "Steffi" head sculpt. My caramel Lanard guy is nice but I would love to see your chocolate one.

    2. Hi Paulette,

One of the two to three posts I have published about my Lanard guy can be read here, where I acknowledged receipt of sandals you made for one of my guys. He was the chosen one.

I look forward to reading the blog post you plan regarding the "Steffi" head sculpt. I am sure I will be enlightened by it.

  3. Some really great finds there. I have several of the Yue Sai WaWa dolls which I purchased when my daughters were young because of their Asian Heritage. I wanted them to have dolls that they could identify with. I have since reclaimed a few of them for my town and they have been rebodied on Liv bodies. I purchased mine from Chinasprout.com. They also sell Barbie/Yue Sai WaWa sized brocade and Mandarin style clothing. Additionally, there is a Kelly sized doll from Yue Sai named Yen Sai WaWa that I also purchased from Chinasprout.

    1. Hi Phyllis, I popped over to Chanasprout and am very tempted. I have one other Yue Sai doll -- a collectible that I purchased on eBay. I am glad to know there is a steady source for these dolls.

  4. These are some great finds! I have that Lanard figure also. Your $15 lady is an awesome find. That jacket comes from CY Girl Ebony action figure, and you could probably easily sell that alone for $15 or more.

  5. Great finds at incredible prices! I read in Debbie's comment that the Steffi is a Teresa head sculpt, I have a doll with this face mold too, she's from the early 80s, yours is probably also from that period then? Or did this head mold get used for the later 80s also? The girl with the weapons is awesome! I love that jacket, and all the weapons. Congratulations with your new arrivals :-).

    1. Hi Night Owl, I'm doing some research about Steffi/ Teresa. The character Teresa was introduced as a Barbie friend in 1988. I don't know what face mold the first Teresa's used but as you note, the face mold that I identified as a Steffi was produced earlier.

  6. Congrats on your top finds! Oh goodie, goodie - identify time ;-)

The dress your early Janay wears is Mattel first Asha's original dress and possibly the skirt/robe though I'm not 100% sure on that one. I gave it away - wasn't thrilled with it.

I think your second doll has the Spanish face mold.

I think your last doll might be Rio de Janiero Lea.

    1. Hi Dana, I thought the fabric looked familiar. It looked like Shani's bathing suit. Thanks for identifying the dress. Also thanks for the link to Katti's dolls. This doll definitely has the "Spanish" face mold. I believe that mold is a variation on the Steffi face.

    1. Hi Georgia Girl, I like Kira but some of them have better face screening than others. I didn't like the purple eye shadow on this one so she's already gone to the Goodwill.

  10. So funny, I almost bought that tweedy looking outfit at that show, but I decided to buy the birthday doll instead. I saw a few of the other dolls you picked up, too. I was on a mission not to buy a lot. Congrats on your new purchases.
